Inside the Art, Outside Ourselves

  • Stove Works 1250 East 13th Street Chattanooga, TN, 37408 United States (map)

Join us for a gathering of conversation and inspiration with one of the works featured in our current exhibition, Reanimator. While sitting with Maja Čule’s work Electronic Witches, we'll use dialogue and activities to learn about the artist's specific experiences and search for a deeper understanding of our shared ones. You can read a review of the work below:

Croatia-based artist Maja Čule’s new work Electronic Witches (2023), a multichannel video installation [...] splices together archival footage and contemporary reenactments of a little-known history of war-torn former Yugoslavia, in which a transnational email-based peace movement ran on hacked dial-up networks, and women taught women how to email.

Čule’s Electronic Witches transcends the specifics of its originating context to transmit an alternate history — and future — of sexuality, technology, and warfare. Blackouts and shadow bans are not monolithic; there will always be a glitch through which to send and receive messages of survival.”

Inside the Art, Outside Ourselves is a 3-part Stove Works Exhibition-Specific series that invites you to spend time reflecting on a work from our current exhibition. Through guiding prompts, we encourage you to dig deeper into the work, into yourself, and to build a connection.

A worksheet will be launched at each public workshop. After the fact, this worksheet can be used by you or with a group at your own pace. You are welcome to respond in whichever working practice makes the most sense to you, be it through drawing, writing, etc.
